Yesterday, I wrote about the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the 81 Democrats who voted for it, despite its harmful anti-trans provisions. I understand that my criticism of these Democrats, including Representatives Kaptur, Landsman, and Sykes, may not sit well with some of my fellow party members. But I believe it’s essential to speak out when our values are compromised—regardless of party lines.
Let me be clear: I am not suggesting that these representatives haven’t done good work while in office. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say they’ve been exceptional in many ways. The notion that “both parties are the same” is, frankly, complete and utter nonsense. On their worst day, these three Representatives are light years ahead of most Republicans at their best.
But here's the thing: No one—no matter how well-intentioned—gets a free pass when it comes to transphobia. This isn’t just about votes. It’s about a refusal to turn a blind eye to dangerous policies. I am speaking out now because we’re entering a very perilous time for all Americans, but especially for LGBTQ+ Americans. The GOP has directly targeted our community, and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation continues to flow from their agenda. The only way to stop this tide is if our Democratic representatives stand firm against it.
When Democrats capitulate, as they did with the NDAA, it leaves many of us questioning their commitment to protecting vulnerable communities. This isn’t about partisan politics—it's about survival. The stakes are too high for us to remain silent.
The truth is, we need our elected officials to act with courage and integrity. Saying nothing lets these representatives believe that their votes—and their decision to use trans people as political pawns—are acceptable. They’re not. By calling them out openly, we make it clear that we are watching, that we care, and that the excuses they’re offering won't be accepted.
It’s also worth noting that while 81 Democrats crossed the line, 140 held firm and voted against this harmful bill. Those 140 members showed what true leadership looks like in these difficult times. That’s the kind of resolve we need more of, especially in the years to come.
As I’ve said before, I am a committed Democrat. But I’m a Democrat because I believe in core values—equality, justice, and human dignity. I support leaders who embody those values and hold them high. My loyalty to the party is not blind; it is rooted in these principles. I will continue to call out those, whether in my party or the other, who fail to uphold them. We must demand better, and we must never stop speaking out for what’s right.
